Codesigning space fiction in the Anthropocene

Overview

In the context of the Anthropocene—characterized by the impact of human activities on Earth—the vulnerability and long-term viability of the future of humanity and the planet have become major concerns. The space sector, influenced by these shifts, is defining its potential role in shaping humanity's possible futures through its long-term projects and visions. At CNES, initiatives such as ecological think tanks have been established to integrate environmental considerations into space projects. This research employs a transdisciplinary, design-led approach to examine the narratives and imaginaries that shape projects and influence CNES members, thereby questioning the ethical and ontological implications of human space exploration in this context. The objective is to co-design—using participatory and iterative methods—narratives for the French space sector in the form of prospective eco-social scenarios that align with IPCC recommendations.
