Interaction and collaboration paradigms for layout design

Overview of thesis

The thesis aims at introducing new interaction supporting collaboration between the different publishing professions as well as layout designers' creative power. Layouts are major artifacts of collaborative editorial projects, caught between the different practices, goals and roles of publishing professionals. However, the proprietary nature of layout design tools may hinder creativity so much that some graphic designers develop alternative practices based on web technologies. Based on a field study of both traditional and alternative layout practices, as well as the associated collectives, we will design and evaluate prototypes of better-fitting tools through participatory design.

The thesis is conducted by a student with a background in graphic design. It falls within the fields of both Design and Human-Computer Interaction. Some of its goals are to address questions of interoperability of collaborative tools as well as support for long-term collaboration in emerging editorial practices.
The theoretical framework consists of ecologies of artifacts, distributed cognition and the concept of boundary objects applied through the Generative Theories of Interaction developed within the Ex-Situ team.
